STANDARDS
Blink and you’ll miss it…
Not your life, or your kid’s childhood even, I’m talking about a week here.
That’s right. One little week. 7 days.
The past week has flown, and I’m up to the eyeballs with edits and revisions for website copy.
One of my main selling points is that I’m able to pull projects together from lots of moving parts, but this week has been a test.
Why?
Because of standards.
Well, differences in standards to be more precise.
You can’t expect everyone to live up to your own standards, because if you did, you’d be forever disappointed, but I’m starting to wonder whether I’m just up tight and a bit too anal about things like punctuation, spelling and JUST DOING YOUR BLOODY JOB WELL.
I’m currently moving some websites over for a large client of mine, as they are moving to a much bigger, nationally known provider.
Working with other creative partners is a privilege, most of the time, until it isn’t, when it becomes a bit of a pain in the arse.
You’d think that the size and reputation of a company would mean a commitment to, at the very least, consistent standards and a bare minimum level of acceptability.
Well, you’d be wrong.
I don’t know if it’s all web developers, but in my limited experience of working with these guys, there seems to be a bit of an ‘it’ll do’ approach at times.
I’d much prefer a ‘we’ll get it done properly’ kind of attitude, but maybe that’s hoping for too much.
It’s not a massive issue, and so this isn’t a massive moan, but I think your standards for how you pass work on to collaborators and partners are a dead giveaway for your character.
It’s this question really:
‘Can you be arsed or not?’
We’re getting there now, but this week would’ve been a lot bloody easier to navigate if I could’ve relied on a ‘one size fits all’ standard from every team member at the company concerned, who, by the way, are mostly very good at what they do.
My issue is that some of the team seem to have finished things properly, whilst some have clearly cut corners, and it has been a bit annoying to deal with, sweeping up after them, so to speak.
And so…
…if you’d like a good level of attention to detail (and high standards of work) from your copywriter, you should speak to me, Culain, at Wood with Words.
At the end of the day, we’re all different, and that’s what creates the rich tapestry of life (vomit), but wouldn’t it be great if we could expect the same standard of work from a company, business or organisation.
(Preferably a high standard of course…)
Yes, it bloody would.
Well, we can’t, so bloody there.
I’ll get back to the proofreading.
Have a nice weekend.
